I write in response to BillrnHauff's letter "Make tramsrnsafer or discard them" (Engi-rnneers Australia May), in whichrnhe expresses his concern aboutrnthe safety of at-grade light rail.rnI beg to differ. The streetsrnof San Fransisco, Dusseldorfrnand Melbourne (to pick threerncities I have a passing familiarityrnwith) do not run red with thernblood of victims of this "killingrnmachine"rnWhile I agree that physical sharing of a lane presents challenges, especially for cyclists, the hyperbole of the letter is both undeserved and unsupported by the statistics: the private car and motorcycle remain the villains of the piece.
