The United Nations has congratulat-ed Engineers Australia for declar-ing 2011 the Year of Humanitarian Engineering. The under-secretary-general for hu-manitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator Baroness Valerie Amos has conveyed her thanks in a letter to the national president Merv Lindsay and members. "I am sure that the need for engineer-ing skills will rise in the near future and it would be useful to hear from your mem-bers ways in which they might contribute to the response to humanitarian crises and natural disasters around the world. One way is through RedR Australia, who make excellent field contributors to UN agencies responding to crises, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs," she wrote.
