Further tribute to Ken Faulkes

I note with sadness and fond memories the passing of Ken Faulkes, as per your obituary in EA Sept 2012. When I was an undergraduate at NSWIT, my recollections are of an inspirational professor in structural concrete who taught things I have never forgotten and now, as a +25yr professional engineer, find myself passing on to my juniors. Among the things he said: "Go back to first principles"; "If you can't do statistics you're no civil engineer" and; "If you ever design a brittle section you should be sacked". Another memorable aspect which he was keen to foster in engineers starting out, and which our blend of ignorance and arrogance led us to doubt, was the value of communication.
