The viability of steel marine structures often depends on the costs and time associated with corrosion protection methods of carbon steels. European steel manufacturers faced with the durability of marine structures incorporating their steel have sought to address the issue, undertaking research projects and the investigation of the cor rosion effects on existing structures. The aim has been to develop a better under standing of factors that affect corrosion and corrosion rates while developing new steel grades that would be less prone to corrosion. Last November ArcelorMittal released a new special steel grade that is expected to significantly increase the design life of marine structures. Known as AMLoCor, it was developed over the past 20 years. It is the product of full scale insitu trials and laboratory tests that have proven its low corrosion properties.
