The completion of TransGrid's Beaconsfield substation redevelopment last November heralded the end of the world's first major insitu gas insulated substation (GIS) replacement. The end result is the largest 132kV GIS in the southern hemisphere. Due to a lack of available space on site, congestion of underground services and restrictions in the geography of the site, connections between the two new GIS buildings were completed using gas insulated line (GIL). This GIL was housed on an elevated gantry (9m in height) - a unique solution and an Australian-first. Due to a combination of ground conditions, contaminated soil issues, surface water and flooding issues, an above-ground cable management area was built with an ultra-efficient cable route design that allowed for segregation of circuits, control and protection duplication, and segregation of AC and DC cables. The substation was built on top of an Ausgrid cable tunnel, and the site interfaces to Ausgrid's cable bridge entering the site, so the cooperation and integration with Ausgrid infrastructure was implemented.
