The New Parallel Runway project at Brisbane Airport is nearing completion of its first phase of works. The full project will cost around $1.3 billion and will take more than eight years to build. The first phase is focused on delivering drainage upgrades, access roads to facilitate future works and adjustments to the smaller cross runway. This phase has already seen a number of innovative sustainable practices. These include the recycling of all cleared trees into a topsoil and mulch product that will be used to cover the future airfield, eliminating the need for thousands of truck movements to carry these materials offsite along local roads. An area within the construction site (and within the wider airport Biodiversity Zone) has also been converted into a specific habitat for the endangered Lewin's Rail bird.
