North Sydney Freight Corridor

The Northern Sydney Freight Corridor program is a joint federal and NSW government initiative to deliver rail freight improvements to the Main North Line between Strathfield and Broadmeadow in Newcastle. The program comprises four key projects: North Strathfield Rail Underpass; Epping to Thornleigh Third Track; Gosford Passing Loops; and the Hexham Passing Loop. The latter was completed in 2012. The first project involves the construction of a rail underpass at North Strathfield, platform upgrades and a new aerial concourse at Concord West Station, including four new lifts. The underpass and associated tracks will improve network reliability for freight and passenger trains by removing the need for freight trains to cross over the existing tracks on the Main North Line.
