Engineers to design reef

The City or Gold Coast is embarking on an ambitious program to boost tourism, but it needs engineering innovation to make it happen. The Gold Coast's tourism industry is one of the city's most important, and in order to boost fairly static tourist numbers, the Gold Coast City Council's Economic Development and Major Projects (EDMP) Directorate is planning to develop Australia's first purpose built dive attraction. In previous cases, the federal government has worked with state and local governments to decommission navy vessels to be scuttled for dive attractions. However, given the significant cost to prepare the vessel and environmental considerations, the city has endorsed a more cost effective and innovative approach to develop artificial reefs and/or maritime structures for a dive attraction.
