Located on the north coast of the South Island of New Zealand, the Marlborough region is home to a temperate climate and fertile plain that have produced some of New Zealand's most famous wines since the 1970s - most notably its Sauvignon Blanc. Almost 80% of the country's total active wine production comes from this region alone. The Matua Marlborough Winery, one of the original wineries in the region and recently acquired in full by Treasury Wine Estates, enlisted the help of Adelaide's Factor UTB to reduce the environmental impact of the winery while allowing it to double in size. The $53 million (NZ$60 million) expansion was approved under New Zealand development laws on the condition that the winery would cease the practice of irrigating pH balanced, but otherwise untreated, wastewater onto pasture areas.
