Steel shines for maritime projects

While the use of concrete in the construction of wharf and jetty structures is extensive, from caissons, piles and decks to girders and counterforts, concerns over durability and capital cost have traditionally limited the use of steel in many maritime constructions. That said, dry bulk export terminal developments over the last few decades show a dominant use of steel for marine structures as increasing demand for materials by developing economies is fuelling investment in the expansion of existing terminals and the development of new ones.
