摘要

High level engineering has been combined with advanced fibre optic technology and software design to develop a highly sensitive catheter that monitors muscular activity deep within the human gut. The detailed recordings made possible by this new catheter have led to it being referred to as 'The Hubble Telescope of Gastroenterology'. The catheter reveals normal and disordered mechanical function of the human gut and sheds new light on the prevalent but largely invisible community health issues of irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and incontinence.
