Gladesville Bridge 50th anniversary

This month on 2 October, marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Gladesville Bridge in Sydney. When it was opened, the Gladesville Bridge was the longest concrete arch bridge in the world, and held that record for 16 years until the Krk Bridge in Croatia was constructed in 1980. Today, Gladesville Bridge is the third longest concrete arch bridge in the world. Initially, the span was to be 910 feet (277 m), however, it was revised to 1000 feet (305 m) following further subsurface investigations that indicated less substantial abutments would be required if the abutments were pushed back. Essentially, this longer span moved the arch thrust blocks out of deep water and close to the banks of the Parramatta River.
