Australia has long played a role in space exploration and space engineering, going back to the opening of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex in 1965, with Australian engineers and scientists continuing to feature in the field. NASA's Curiosity rover, which in 2012 began sending back panoramic colour pictures taken from the surface of Mars, relayed its confirmation of safe touchdown on Mars through the Canberra complex. So it is appropriate that two Australian engineers, retired astronaut Dr Andrew Thomas and International Space Station (ISS) operator Andrea Boyd, will appear alongside Colonel Chris Hadfield (retired) at a Convention 2014 keynote session.
