2014 is the centenary of the start of WWI, which was marked on Anzac Day this year, our national day of remembrance. Engineers Australia's (EA) national president Prof Alex Baitch paid tribute to those Anzacs who served and died, highlighting the important contribution of engineers in the war effort. The Australian nation was very young in 1914, Baitch said, and our Anzacs played a significant role in defining us as a nation. "Engineering developments and the emergence of customised technologies played a crucial role to military operations during WWI in all areas, including: weaponry and artillery, logistics and support for transportation of troops, communications and intelligence, including navigation, and medicine, with the creation of surgical innovations.
