In his article in the March edition of Engineers Australia, Nolan Bear seeks answers to the question of how best to master complex projects, to which I contribute the following. In my 35 years of engineering and project management experience, I can safely attest that issues causing projects to fail are much the same for smaller simpler projects as they are for the large and complex variety ... but as the saying goes, "the bigger they are the harder they fall!" The Lessons Learned process, in my view, is by far the most valuable preventative measure one can take to avoid making similar mistakes and to implement improvements. But for reasons beyond understanding, sometimes people don't do enough research or learn from those mistakes.
