Ray Stalker was Australia's first professor of space engineering and a pioneer in the field of hypersonics and of the worlds fastest jet engine, the scramjet. In the 1960s he developed the first high performance shock tubes for testing aircraft technology and aerodynamics at supersonic speeds. He was a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Queensland when he was named professor of space engineering, pioneering work on supersonic combustion ramjet, or scramjet technology. Stalker also established the Centre for Hypersonics.
