Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used to assess 260 km of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme pipeline in Western Australia. The UAVs were able to check up to 10 km of pipeline in a matter of minutes, and the entire project was completed in six days. Prior to the undertaking, acting water minister Terry Redman said the UAVs would be used to perform a visual inspection of the historic pipeline. "This is truly bringing the old world and new world together: using advanced technology to inspect a 112 year old pipeline," Redman said. "Using UAVs means initial visual inspections of pipelines can be carried out in a more efficient and cost effective way.
