As projects grow increasingly complex, the engineering fraternity has an opportunity to harness lessons learned on recent projects to ensure future projects benefit from these lessons and are delivered to a higher standard. Hyder Consulting played a part in two alliances that completed large and complex Victorian road projects in recent years: the West Gate Freeway Upgrade and the M80 Ring Road Upgrade. The alliance framework is now a rare delivery model in the market, but these projects demonstrate the efficacy of shared values and culture, positive behaviours, good leadership and excellent early planning as success factors. With the recent release of the Mastering Complex Projects white paper, it is worth examining these alliance success factors and considering how we can continue to seek a "best for project" behaviour and approach outside the alliance delivery model.
