Barry Thomas has a lot to be optimistic about, although he would like to see changes to certain taxes affecting innovation. Cook Medical's facility in Brisbane is the only site in the world that makes patient-specific stent grafts for abdominal aortic aneurysms. Thomas is passionate about doing more to get great ideas out into the marketplace. However, there is a need for policymakers to look towards the UK and its 'patent box' system to fully realise benefits of local R&D. Cook strongly backs an Australian Innovation & Manufacturing (AIM) incentive, based on the patent box.
