Australia has nearly halved its steel production over the past decade, as our export industry collapsed under the weight of the high Australian dollar and our producers struggled to compete with low-cost producers from Asia. Now there is a threat to close the large Port Kembla works, our biggest and most advanced steel plant. Some see this as a sign of our economy moving from traditional industries towards a more high-technology future.
