Main Roads WA is making Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) a primary focus for the state's transport infrastructure into the future. The department released the ITS Master Plan late in 2014, and Gateway WA is rolling out technology not used previously in WA. While variable message signs (VMS) have been used in Australia for many years now, the 16 VMS spread across Gateway WA use displays not seen before in WA. The state's existing displays are simple monochrome affairs, but on Gateway WA they include a full colour section on the left, and text side can be either amber or white. "WA has also previously not done much in terms of travel times on the VMS," Gateway WA project engineer Kingsley Pettitt says.
