Little do visitors to the new river-walk in downtown Richmond, Va. know that deep down below the beautiful canal system that meanders through quaint shops, restaurants and historic buildings flows a state-of-the-art overflow sewer water system. The innovative engineering project was the result of combined interests to both improve the city's, aesthetic canal system along the James River and to modernize its downtown combined sewer overflow (CSO) system, which was deemed insufficient as it approached its century mark.
