To win a race to install a new 125-ton Scoreboard for the Nittany Lions' first home game next month, the construction team renovating Penn State University's Beaver Stadium needed to lift the 158 x 38-ft frame in one pick. To put the board in place, they brought in the largest crawler crane made in the U.S., a 1,000-ton capacity crane with a 340-ft-long boom. The strategy squashed a five or six-month construction schedule into two and a half months. The framework was assembled on the ground and, on Aug. 8, lifted onto new supports with a Manitowoc 21000. Because the board was lifted at a radius of 95 ft, the lift required 92 to 95% of the crane's capacity, says Richard Marker, president of steel erector, Glenco Construction Services Inc., Lewistown, Pa.
