The market for international design firms ran into a brick wall in 1997 when Asia suffered a series of financial catastrophes. These difficulties were compounded in 1998, when Brazil's economy suffered a financial setback. There have been signs of recovery, so the international design community took a waitand-see attitude. But the returns from the ENR Top 200 International Design Firms survey indicate that the community still is waiting. ENR's Top 200 generated $17.2 billion in design revenue from projects outside their home countries in 1999, a meager 1.3% above 1998's mark of $17.0 billion.
