Swiss engineers are working to reopen the 16.3-kilometer-long St. Got-thard alpine tunnel before Christmas, following an Oct. 24 truck fire. Eleven deaths were confirmed last week and local police feared that number could still rise. Some 200 m of the world's second longest highway tunnel was only superficially damaged and the primary concrete lining appeared unscathed.
