INVESTIGATORS SEARCH FOR CAUSE OF DEADLY SCAFFOLD COLLAPSE

Officials are investigating a deadly scaffolding collapse at a Manhattan office building and are asking if overloading was to blame. The Oct. 24 accident killed five construction workers and injured 10 others who were pointing a masonry wall. Many of the emergency workers who responded to the accident had been clearing debris at the World Trade Center site. Investigators are examining several theories about the cause of the collapse. One is that an overloaded makeshift hoist was attached directly to the scaffold and caused it to topple. However, all involved in the investigation say it is still too early to determine a cause. "We are looking into that and every other possibility," says Ilyse Fink, New York City Building Dept. spokesperson.
