The nation's water utili-ties, already facing costly new drinking water safety standards, may have to spend tens of billions of dollars more just to keep that water flowing. The American Water Works Association unveiled a new study at its annual convention. in Washington, D.C., last month that predicts required spending of more than $250 billion over the next 30 years just to replace aging pipes and other basic infrastructure. Even with supporters on Capitol Hill, AWWA officials admitted they have their work cut out to win new funding to fix worn-out water systems.
