Forces of Nature Harnessed To Save Highway and River

In the northwest comer of Washington, the Hoh River flows from Olympic mountain peaks into the temperate rain forest ecosystem below. There, the Hoh regularly wreaks havoc on roads and homes that have sprung up in its floodplain. Over the last two decades, the 55-mile long river has eroded nearly 600 ft of bank along the shoulder of State Route 101, the only road through the Olympic Peninsula's west side and an important industrial artery.
