In the aftermath of Katrina, thousands of linemen and power crewmen have been diverted to Louisiana and other points in the Gulf Coast region. Overall, restoration of the power system has progressed relatively quickly except in those areas hit hard by flooding, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Despite this progress, the hurricane is likely to have a domino effect on the U.S. power sector for months to come. "Labor resources will become tighter in the region and surrounding areas and resources for new power facilities may now be diverted for restoration work," says Rick Bonsack, business development manager for power for BE&K Inc., Birmingham, Ala.
