For design firms, the recent strong market has been a mixed blessing. At times, there has been more work than they can handle. This has put intense pressure on staff salaries, as firms scramble to recruit and retain staffers. Many firms hope the one place they can hold the line on salaries is at the executive level, where they are using big bonuses in lieu of higher base salaries.
