The commission reviewing the Dept. of Defense plan to close or shrink hundreds of U.S. bases has pared the Pentagon's shutdown list, saving some prominent posts. But it left standing most DOD recommendations, all but ensuring billions of dollars of construction to clean up installations to be closed, expand others that gain workers from shuttered posts and redevelopment to give closed bases new uses. Looking at the result of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commis-sion's Aug. 24-27 deliberations, "Our opinion is it doesn't change opportunities significantly," says Martin Fabrick, executive vice president with Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group, Pasadena, Calif. "It's certainly going to be a lot of work in a short period of time." Adds Paul Steinke, executive vice president with DMJM H&N, Los Angeles: "I think we're excited about the opportunities it represents...both on the closure side and the reassignment side."
