Demonstrating how only a couple of poor projects can sink a sub-stantial firm, a unit of surety St. Paul Travelers has taken over the projects of general contractor Mauldin-Dorfmeier Construction Inc. and the firm has filed for bankruptcy. Disputes on two big public works projects—an airport terminal and student housing at the University of California at Merced—cut off the contractor's cash flow, says Peter N. Zeitler, firm attorney. Mauldin-Dorfmeier is involved in lawsuits with owners over both projects and St. Paul has brought in other contractors to finish the projects. Dozens of trade creditors remain unpaid. Executives "couldn't get their surety or creditors to work with them," Zeitler claims. The Fresno, Calif.-based contractor filed for bankruptcy Feb. 28 in federal court there.
