Powerplant Builder Calpine Weighs Future in Bankruptcy

Calpine Corp. plans to continue building eight powerplants now under construction, despite its Dec. 20, 2005, decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. San Jose, Calif.-based Calpine, burdened with more than $22 billion in debt, filed voluntary restructuring petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan. High natural gas prices left the merchant power producer unable to make loan and bond payments.
