California To Exorcise Devil of A Road Section With Bypass

After 20 years of legal protests and studies, digging has begun on twin tunnels for the $322-million Devil's Slide project, which will cut a new 1.2-mile bypass route for Highway 1 through San Pedro Mountain along the California coast some 15 miles south of San Francisco. Vancouver, Wash.-based Kiewit Pacific Co. is the tunneling contractor for owner/engineer California Dept. of Transportation. It is Caltrans' first tunneling project since the 3,771-ft-long third bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, which carries two 14-ft-wide lanes.
