China Pushes Sustainability As Urbanization Intensifies

Green building in China is maturing. As the country prepares to urbanize 350 million people over the next 20 years, there is growing pressure to conserve energy and reduce pollution, leading to the launch of China's first national green-building standard this past May. Han Jihong, deputy director of the Green Building Construction Technology Research Council of the Ministry of Housing and Urban and Rural Development, speaking at the China Green Building and Energy Efficiency Conference held Sept. 18-19 in Shanghai, said the standard sets a one-, two- or three-star hierarchy and rewards conservation of land, energy use and water over the life cycle of a building. Buildings have to be in service for one year and demonstrate achievement of the goals before final certification. The first round of stars was awarded to 10 projects this year.
