The total value of construction put-in-place increased 0.8% in August from July's pace, according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce's seasonally adjusted annual data. This gain checked three months of sharp declines for the seasonally adjusted data (see chart). On a year-to-date basis, total construction put-in-place through the first eight months of this year was $629.5 billion, a 3.8% increase over the previous month (see table). However, both sets of data are about 12% below 2008's level.
