An important lesson from Japan's devastating disaster is our nation's need for a comprehensive energy policy that incorporates energy security, fuel diversity and economic development. Renewable energy plays a critical role in achieving all three.rnCurrently, the U.S. relies primarily on fossil fuels and nuclear energy. In some cases, like Florida, natural gas is taking on a much greater role. In the last decade, Florida's dependence on natural gas has grown from about 17% to 50%. Some predict that dependence will grow to 75%.
