Digging the Foundation for a National Museum

The Washington Monument will have a new neighbor when the National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC] opens its doors to the public in November 2015. The Smithsonian Institution, Office of Contracting has contracted Clark Construction Group as part of a joint venture with Smoot Construction and Russell Construction to build the $290-million museum. Currently in the foundation portion of the project, Clark rented a Liebherr HS855SX from Essex Crane Rental Corp. The crane's 44,000-lb drums made it a perfect fit for the 600 mm grab that is required to dig the foundation footings of the museum.
