Nevada Nips Mule Deer Collisions

There are approximately 2.4 million vehicle-deer collisions in the U.S. each year, causing $5 to $8 billion in damage. During a five-year period in Nevada, nearly 2,000 automobile- animal collisions were reported with an estimated 50-71% more left unreported. Research conducted by the Nevada Dept. of Transportation (NDOT) and the Nevada Dept. of Wildlife (NDOW) showed that a section of US 93 in northeastern Wells, Nev., crosses a seasonal mule deer migration route, resulting in one of the state's largest vehicle-deer collision rates. To enhance the safety of both the wildlife and traveling motorists, NDOT invested in an overpass structure.
