Nuclear Waste

The U.S. Energy Dept. on April 20 awarded a $1.3-billion management and operations (M&O) contract for its Waste Isolation and Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico to URS Corp. and its partners Babcock & Wilcox and AREVA Federal Services. They will manage transportation of plutonium-tainted transuranic waste from U.S. nuclear-waste sites and storage, which is thousands of feet underground in massive salt formations near Carlsbad. The five-year contract is the latest for URS, which has led the M&O contract team at WIPP since 2001.
