Moisture from a blizzard in January 1978 caused cracks in the shield building of the Davis-Besse nuclear power station, Oak Harbor, Ohio, according to an analysis submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission by plant operator FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. While the shield building is still structurally sound and fully operational, FirstEnergy proposes applying a weatherproof coating to the building's exterior and plans to initiate.
