Plan Calls for $17 Billion To Uoarade California's Levees

Calling for a state-and regional-funded effort to shore up a disintegrating Central Valley levee system, the California Dept. of Water Resources released its first flood protection plan Dec. 30, as recommended by Gov. Jerry Brown. The plan estimates an expenditure of up to $17 billion during the next 20 to 25 years to improve flood protection along the Sacramento and San Joaquin river systems. The DWR says about half of the state's urban levees do not meet current engineering criteria and about 60% of nonurban levees have relatively high potential for failure.
