The Romans became famous for the arch-but it was J.F. White Contracting Co. (Framingham, Mass.) that first applied an innovative solution for safer, more efficient access to bridge arch repair and maintenance while working on the Longfellow Bridge. One of the most architecturally distinguished bridges in Boston, the 2,135-ft Longfellow Bridge has 11 open-spandrel steel arches. The curve of the bridge's 11 arches-which vary in length and radius-presented a significant access challenge.
