Drilled Shafts Set Foundation of New St. Croix River Crossing Bridge

The new St. Croix River Crossing Bridge over the St. Croix River in Stillwater, Minn., will be the second extradosed bridge constructed in the U.S. when it's complete in 2016. A vital part of the construction is the bridge foundations, which includes 41 9-ft-dia drilled shafts with depths ranging from 61 ft to 161 ft. The drilled shafts are then filled with rebar and concrete to create solid foundations for the new bridge. All work was performed off barges on the St. Croix River using specialized drill rigs developed just for the project. The challenges of deep foundation work while working off of barges required total commitment from the project team. The dedication of the field management and crew not only to their craft, but more importantly safety helped to achieve to the project's success. Thanks to the partnership between Case, Edward Kraemer Sons, Inc. and the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation, Case Foundation Co. wrapped up drilled shaft work in October 2013-on schedule.
