Power Plant Site Repurposing Picks Up Steam

Owners of coal- and fuel-oil-fired power plants, in both regulated and unregulated markets, face serious challenges. These include an ample supply of low-priced natural gas, pressures from more stringent environmental regulations and their costly measures for compliance. By one estimate, as many as 353 plants representing 59 GW of capacity may be retired over the next decade, enough to power more than 44 million homes.
