Health-Care Law Boosts Outpatient Facilities

Hospitals and health-care facilities have a new mandate going forward: moving outpatient activities into lower-cost facilities while also creating more focus on lifelong wellness. This initiative is largely a result of requirements of the Affordable Health Care Act, signed into law in March 2010. One provision of the law requires hospitals to keep their outpatient facility costs to a minimum to reduce patient expenses. As a result, health-care owners are shifting patients who are receiving outpatient services into buildings that are separate from the core inpatient facilities.
