New NY Bridge: BrIM-ing With Possibilities

When complete, the New NY Bridge will become the latest in iconic bridges in a city world-renowned for signature structures. What many may not realize is that beyond the beautiful design, this bridge also signifies a shift in bridge building services. As the lead designer on the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project, HDR is proactively adapting its building information modeling (BIM) capabilities to support bridge design processes and deliver more intelligent transportation solutions to its clients. For the New NY Bridge specifically, HDR, along with Tappan Zee Constructors, is developing a complete 3D bridge information model (BrIM) that combines design and construction intelligence into a single user-friendly interface. The HDR-developed solution provides a streamlined way to easily connect design, construction and asset management while eliminating the need for duplication of information throughout the different phases of the project. Built using multiple systems such as Bentley MicroStation, SQL Database and the Unity gaming engine, the BrIM solution allows for modules to be added and modified as technology advances.
