At the nucleus of risk management is identification, classification and prioritization of risks. While no one has "the ability to foresee every possible risk and pitfall, it is critical to make a discerned effort to identify and assess as many conceivable risks as possible. Once identified and assessed, one or a combination of five risk treatment techniques are deployed: avoid, reduce, transfer, share or retain.
