Hong Kong highway officials have raised doubts about concrete quality on China's 35.6-kilometer-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge project after the May 23 arrests of 21 employees, including two senior executives, of a quality-testing contractor. The government ordered nondestructive concrete testing of bridge structures and tunnels associated with the unnamed testing firm, which began work in 2013. Suspicions of malpractice arose in early 2015, probers said. Contractor staff are suspected of falsifying results to cover up irregularities in required test timings and of further cover-ups in a later internal probe. Investigators said there was no evidence that public officials or other project firms were involved.
