An Oregon State University study says more than half of U.S. construction workers surveyed ignore training—on some occasions—to take "calculated risks" on jobsites. Mohammed Azeez, a PhD engineering candidate at the school, said 82 of 149 workers surveyed in 36 states reported they "sometimes" take calculated risks. Another 15 said they take the risks "most of the time," while two said they always take them. By contrast, 50 workers said they "never" ignore training to do something they know is risky. "A good percentage of the time, many people take more risk than they should," says John Gambatese, a workplace safety expert and university engineering professor who is overseeing the research. Azeez says new studies will involve in-depth interviews with workers to study what drives risk-taking behavior.
